Heel Pain

There are several causes for heel pain. The plantar fascia is a ligament that runs from the heel to the ball of the foot that supports the arch. If the foot either flattens too much or too little, the plantar fascia can become strained. This causes pain and discomfort in the foot. Dr. Seel often recommends a pair of orthotics (shoe inserts) to alleviate tension.

Sometimes when the plantar fascia tugs on the heel, a spur develops on the heel. A spur may also develop on the back of the heel, where the Achilles tendon may tug on the heel. Bone spurs cause pain and may make walking difficult. In this case, the doctor may recommend orthotics or possibly surgery.
