A podiatrist, or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), specializes in problems of the lower extremities. They receive extensive training for four years at a podiatric college and continue with their residency for one to three years, honing their surgical skills. 

Why would a patient see a podiatrist? Since podiatrists specialize in foot and ankle ailments, they are more highly trained than a family physician in the treatment of problems located in that region of the body.
